Overcoming the language barrier presents a serious challenge. Cultural scripts, developed by ethnopragmatics, can facilitate and further the deeper cross-cultural understanding which is relevant for effective multinational teamwork.

In order to test the effectiveness of cultural scripts in cross-cultural training, a survey has been conducted with business students at an Austrian university. Two groups of students — students with training in cultural scripts and students without training — were asked about issues in cross-cultural communication.

The results indicate that cultural scripts enhance the understanding of other cultures, create an awareness of cross-cultural pragmatic differences, impact positively on culturally appropriate language use, and prepare people for work in multinational teams.

Cultural scripts, thus, make it possible to diminish the language barrier in international business.
